Biotechnology
Biotechnology, by definition, refers to the use of knowledge about biological processes and the properties of living beings, in order to solve problems and create useful products, or even the use of living organisms or part of them, to the production of goods and services. In this context, it is possible to list the following studies developed at the PPGQ-UFC within the Biotechnology research line:
- Biocatalysis: study of biocatalytic processes aiming to obtain chiral intermediates or organic chiral substances with high added value for application in the pharmaceutical industries, cosmetic/fragrance and agrochemical. The development of biocatalytic processes is related to the search for efficient biocatalysts for organic reactions, of local origin, such as whole plant or microbial cells (fungi, yeasts and bacteria) or even isolated, commercially available enzymes.
- Search for acetylcholinesterase enzyme inhibitors for the development of new drugs for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and new insecticides.
- Search for antioxidants in tropical fruits and their residues.
- Isolation, development of rapid identification strategies, conservation, interactions between species and biotechnological exploration of marine invertebrates and associated microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) from the Ceará coast.
