Applications of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance has developed enormously in the last 20 years, mainly due to technological improvement of the equipment used in spectroscopic analysis. This improvement makes room for new types of studies in several areas. In Natural Products Chemistry, advances in NMR are reflected in the ability to analyze smaller and smaller samples, in addition to studying core before prevented by equipment limitations. In addition the sensitivity, MRI is also concerned with methods that produce the best spread spectrum signals generated by facilitating the analysis. Hyphenated techniques dimensional (2D) as HSQC-COSY, TOCSY HSQC-,-NOESY HSQC, among others, and techniques dimensional (3D) homo and heteronuclear make possible the analysis of more complex compounds such as proteins and nucleic acids, and the latest techniques diffusion (DOSY, Diffusion Ordered Spectroscopy) permits the analysis of mixtures, by a “spin chromatography,” causing the spectra obtained in a mixture of compounds without its separation.
Moreover, the study of coupling constants and chemical shifts other nuclei, such as 15N, made room for a more refined in a large number of organic compounds, since the amino acids, peptides, proteins and nucleic acids alkalis, and a large number of inorganic compounds.
Since NMR is an extremely informative, through it, it is also possible to evaluate quality and quantity in a single analysis, allowing inferences about characteristics such as origin, authenticity, adulteration and contamination in products manufactured from the most diverse. At this point, the use of chemometrics is essential to define or select the optimal conditions for measurements and experiments, allowing to obtain the maximum information from the analysis of chemical data.
Within these concepts, are adopted as lines of research:

  • Applications of modern techniques for Multidimensional Multinuclear Magnetic Resonance in Chemistry of Natural Products;
  • Diffusion assisted by headquarters in Natural Products;
  • Quantitative Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Chemometrics.
